A detailed fragment from the Maestà by Duccio di Buoninsegna, depicting the Dormition of the Virgin with characteristic Sienese grace.
This fragment originates from the Maestà, the large altarpiece commissioned for the Siena Cathedral. Duccio di Buoninsegna, a central figure in the development of Sienese painting, executed this work during the early fourteenth century. The composition depicts the Dormition of the Virgin, a subject common in medieval iconography, where the Virgin Mary lies in repose surrounded by Christ and a gathering of figures.
Duccio employs a refined approach to tempera, using delicate brushwork to define the facial features and the folds of the garments. The central figure of Christ holds a small, swaddled soul representing the Virgin, a visual convention used to signify the transition of the spirit. The surrounding figures exhibit a range of expressions, their gazes directed toward the central event. The use of gold leaf in the background and the haloes provides a luminous quality, typical of the period, while the blue of the Virgin's mantle offers a strong chromatic contrast to the warmer tones of the surrounding drapery.
The work demonstrates the transition from the rigid Byzantine style toward a more humanised representation of religious figures. Duccio focuses on the emotional weight of the scene, balancing the solemnity of the subject with a sense of physical presence. The crackling of the paint surface, visible in this high-resolution reproduction, provides evidence of the work's age and the material history of the original panel. This print captures the specific nuances of the tempera technique, allowing for a close examination of the artist's application of colour and line.
