The Assumption of the Virgin, completed by Titian between 1516 and 1518, is a monumental work originally commissioned for the high altar of the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice. The composition is divided into three distinct horizontal tiers, creating a sense of vertical movement that guides the viewer from the earthly realm to the divine.

At the base, the Apostles are depicted in a state of agitation and awe, their gestures and expressions conveying a collective reaction to the miraculous event. Their figures are rendered with heavy, muscular forms and dramatic drapery, typical of the Venetian High Renaissance style. In the centre, the Virgin Mary ascends towards heaven, supported by a cloud of cherubs. Her red robe and blue mantle provide a strong chromatic contrast against the golden light that emanates from the upper register. Her posture, with arms outstretched and eyes turned upward, communicates a sense of spiritual release.

Above, God the Father awaits her arrival, framed by a celestial glow. The entire scene is contained within an arched format, which Titian uses to enhance the sense of height and architectural integration. The painting is noted for its use of colour and light to define space and emotion, moving away from the linear precision of earlier periods towards a more painterly approach. The scale of the work is immense, designed to be viewed from a distance within the church, yet it retains a high degree of detail in the individual figures. This work established Titian as a leading painter in Venice, demonstrating his ability to manage complex narrative structures and large-scale compositions with technical confidence.
