A tranquil landscape by German Expressionist August Macke, 'At the Rhine near Hersel' captures a serene moment along the river with soft colours and simplified forms.
August Macke (1887-1914) was a German Expressionist painter, one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). His work is characterised by its bright colours, simplified forms, and interest in capturing the fleeting moments of everyday life. Macke's career was cut short by his death in World War I at the age of 27. 'At the Rhine near Hersel' depicts a tranquil scene along the Rhine River. The composition is divided horizontally, with the river occupying the majority of the space. The water is rendered in soft, muted tones, reflecting the overcast sky above. In the foreground, a grassy bank slopes down to the river's edge, punctuated by a row of dark, rounded bushes. Across the river, a strip of land is visible, with trees and buildings silhouetted against the horizon. The overall mood is one of serenity and contemplation, capturing a quiet moment in nature.
