A quiet, atmospheric scene of a woman at a stone well in Anacapri, rendered in the loose, painterly style of British Impressionism.
James Charles, a member of the New English Art Club, produced this work during his travels in Italy. The painting captures a quiet, domestic moment in Anacapri, a village on the island of Capri. A woman stands by a stone well, her posture suggesting the physical effort of drawing water. The architecture of the surrounding walls is rendered with a focus on texture and the effects of light on weathered stone surfaces.
Charles employs a palette dominated by earthy tones, ochres, and muted greys, which reflect the sun-bleached environment of the Mediterranean. His brushwork is loose and painterly, a characteristic of the plein-air approach adopted by many British artists who looked towards French Impressionism during the late nineteenth century. The composition is balanced, with the vertical line of the well mechanism providing a structural anchor against the horizontal expanse of the wall.
Unlike the more polished academic works of the period, this painting prioritises the atmospheric quality of the scene. The play of light across the uneven plaster and the shadows cast within the arched recesses demonstrate the artist's interest in natural illumination. The inclusion of a small animal near the base of the well adds a sense of lived-in reality to the setting. This piece offers a glimpse into the everyday life of the region, observed with a sympathetic eye for the mundane. It remains a representative example of the shift in British painting towards a more direct, observational style, moving away from the rigid narrative structures that dominated the mid-Victorian era.
