This watercolour by Hilma af Klint, titled 'Atom Series, No. 8', showcases the artist's exploration of abstract forms and spiritual concepts. The artwork features geometric shapes and symbolic colours to represent the unseen forces of the universe.
Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings are considered among the first abstract works in Western art history. She produced a body of work that predates the more widely known abstract compositions of artists such as Kandinsky and Mondrian. Her art combines geometric shapes, symbolic colours, and diagrams, often inspired by spiritualism, Theosophy, and her own esoteric studies. 'Atom Series, No. 8' exemplifies af Klint's exploration of the unseen forces and structures of the universe. Two squares dominate the composition. The upper square is black, bisected by a white crescent shape, with radiating lines extending to the corners. The lower square, framed in green, contains a blue field with an orange and white circular form at its centre, also emitting rays. The watercolour technique lends a soft, ethereal quality to the work, enhancing its otherworldly feel. The piece reflects af Klint's interest in depicting the atomic level of reality and the dynamic interplay between rest and activity within these fundamental particles.
