A 1931 lithograph by M.C. Escher depicting the vertical architecture of Atrani on the Amalfi Coast, rendered with precise lines and high-contrast shading.
Atrani, Coast of Amalfi is a lithograph produced by M.C. Escher in 1931. During his residence in Italy, Escher frequently travelled along the Mediterranean coast, documenting the steep, vertical architecture of the region. This work captures the town of Atrani, situated on the Amalfi Coast, through a high-angle perspective that emphasises the density of the buildings as they cling to the rugged cliffside.
The composition is defined by a stark contrast between the bright, white-washed structures and the dark, cross-hatched texture of the sea and sky. Escher employs a precise, almost clinical line quality to delineate the geometric forms of the houses, the church tower, and the winding staircases. While the scene depicts a real location, the arrangement of the buildings suggests the spatial puzzles that would occupy his later career. The figures scattered throughout the town are small, providing a sense of scale against the imposing verticality of the cliffs.
Escher was fascinated by the way Italian architecture integrated with the natural environment. In this print, the buildings appear to grow out of the rock, creating a seamless transition between human construction and geological formation. The use of light and shadow is deliberate, with the white surfaces of the town reflecting sunlight, while the surrounding environment is rendered in dense, dark strokes. This work demonstrates his early mastery of lithography and his ability to transform a specific geographical site into a structured, graphic arrangement. It remains a clear example of his observational period before he shifted his focus toward purely mathematical and impossible constructions.
