Jacques Villon's 'Au coin du bois' is a Cubist painting from 1953, featuring geometric shapes and a bright palette to evoke a woodland scene. This abstract work balances representation and abstraction.
Jacques Villon, born Gaston Émile Duchamp, was a French Cubist and abstract painter, also known for his printmaking. He was the brother of artists Marcel Duchamp and Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti. Villon developed his own style of Cubism, characterised by geometric forms and a bright colour palette. He was a member of the Section d'Or group, which included artists such as Juan Gris and Fernand Léger. 'Au coin du bois' ('At the Edge of the Woods') exemplifies Villon's later style, moving towards greater abstraction while retaining a sense of spatial depth. The composition is built from interlocking geometric shapes in shades of yellow, green, red, and brown. These forms suggest trees, foliage, and sunlight filtering through the woods. The painting's surface is active, with visible brushstrokes adding texture and movement. The overall effect is a harmonious balance between representation and abstraction, capturing the essence of a woodland scene through a Cubist lens.
