Born in Nantes, France, in 1882, Barbier initially trained at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, later studying under Jean-Paul Laurens. He quickly established himself as a sought-after illustrator, his sophisticated and often theatrical designs gracing the pages of Vogue, Gazette du Bon Ton, and other high-fashion publications.
