A detailed etching by Auguste Louis Lepère depicting rural figures at work in a forest setting, showcasing his technical mastery of line and shadow.
Auguste Louis Lepère was a master of the graphic arts, known for his technical precision in wood engraving and etching. This work, Au Rocher Bernard, captures a quiet moment of rural labour. The composition features two figures engaged in tasks near a large tree, while others appear in the background. Lepère uses a dense network of lines to build form and shadow, creating a sense of texture in the bark, the foliage, and the clothing of the subjects.
The artist demonstrates his command of the etching needle through varied mark-making. He employs cross-hatching to define the darker areas of the forest floor and the dense thicket, while using lighter, more directional strokes to suggest the play of light filtering through the canopy. The figures are rendered with a focus on their posture and the weight of their tools, reflecting the daily realities of life in the French countryside during the late nineteenth century.
Lepère was instrumental in the revival of original printmaking in France. His work often moved away from the reproductive engraving common at the time, favouring a more personal and expressive approach to the medium. This print shows his ability to balance atmospheric depth with the physical constraints of the etched line. The scene is grounded in observation, avoiding romanticised artifice in favour of a direct, honest depiction of the environment. The inclusion of the artist's signature and the edition numbering in the lower margin indicates the care taken in the production of these limited impressions. This piece offers a glimpse into the technical rigour and observational skill that defined Lepère's career as both a printmaker and a painter.
