A detailed Dutch genre print by Joannes Bemme depicting a street vendor selling gherkins to two children.
This work by Joannes Bemme captures a moment of daily commerce in the Netherlands during the early nineteenth century. The scene depicts a street vendor, identified as a gherkin seller, interacting with two children. The vendor, wearing a tricorn hat and a long apron, holds a large jar while offering a small item to a young boy who reaches up with anticipation. A second child, partially obscured, stands beside the boy with a basket, observing the exchange.
Bemme employs a clear, linear style characteristic of the period, using wash to provide depth and shadow to the figures. The composition is straightforward, placing the three figures against a plain background to focus the viewer on the social interaction. The artist demonstrates a keen interest in the attire and mannerisms of the working class, a common subject in Dutch genre art. The figures are rendered with a sense of character, from the vendor's knowing expression to the children's eager postures.
As an etcher and draughtsman, Bemme was active in Rotterdam, where he documented various aspects of urban life. This print reflects the tradition of Dutch genre studies, which often sought to record the specific trades and social hierarchies of the time. The use of ink wash over etched lines creates a soft, tonal quality that distinguishes the figures from the empty space surrounding them. This approach allows the artist to define form through light and shadow, providing a realistic depiction of the subjects. The work provides a glimpse into the informal economy of the era, where street vendors were a common sight in city centres. It remains a precise observation of social history, captured through the medium of printmaking.
