A striking self-portrait by Surrealist artist Leonor Fini, featuring her signature dramatic style and intense, direct gaze.
Leonor Fini, a self-taught artist of Argentine and Italian heritage, occupied a unique position within the Surrealist circle. Unlike many of her contemporaries who focused on the subconscious through dream-like juxtapositions, Fini often turned her gaze toward the construction of identity and the theatricality of the self. This portrait, Autoportrait au grand col, captures the artist with a characteristic intensity. Her gaze is direct, meeting the viewer with a sense of composure that borders on the enigmatic.
The composition is dominated by the dramatic, sweeping lines of the collar, which frame her face and draw attention to the deliberate styling of her hair. Fini frequently used her own image as a vehicle for exploring themes of power, gender, and artifice. The muted, earthy palette serves to focus the viewer on the psychological weight of the subject rather than decorative elements. Her brushwork is controlled, allowing for a soft transition of light across the skin, which contrasts with the sharper, more angular treatment of the garment.
Fini was known for her independence, refusing to formally join the Surrealist group despite her close associations with figures such as Max Ernst and Salvador Dalí. This autonomy is visible in her work, which avoids the more dogmatic approaches of the movement. Her portraits often possess a timeless quality, drawing inspiration from Renaissance masters while maintaining a distinctly modern sensibility. The focus here remains on the persona, a recurring subject in her oeuvre, where the artist acts as both creator and muse. This print captures the subtle tonal shifts and the atmospheric quality of the original oil painting, offering a glimpse into the singular vision of an artist who remained outside the established hierarchies of her time.
