Joseph Ducreux was a French portraitist who served as the first painter to King Louis XVI. While his formal commissions adhered to the rigid standards of the eighteenth-century French court, his personal work often deviated from these conventions. This self-portrait, titled Autoportrait en homme surpris et terrorisé, demonstrates his interest in physiognomy and the expression of extreme human emotion.

The painting captures the artist in a moment of sudden alarm. His eyes are wide, his mouth is agape, and his hand is raised in a defensive gesture. This departure from the stoic, composed portraiture typical of the era suggests an exploration of the limits of facial expression. Ducreux utilised a dramatic, dark background to focus the viewer's attention on the subject's reaction.
