A striking self-portrait by Colombian Impressionist Andres de Santa Maria, featuring expressive brushwork and a bold contrast between cool facial tones and a warm yellow background.
Andres de Santa Maria, a figure of significant note in Colombian art history, spent much of his career in Europe, where he engaged with the stylistic developments of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This self-portrait demonstrates his affinity for the broken brushwork and light-focused approach characteristic of Impressionism. The artist captures his own likeness with a focus on the interplay of colour and texture rather than rigid anatomical precision.
The composition is dominated by a stark contrast between the cool, shadowed tones of the subject's face and the warm, luminous yellow background. Santa Maria employs a palette of violet, blue, and ochre to model his features, allowing the paint to sit heavily upon the canvas. This technique creates a sense of immediacy and movement, as the light appears to flicker across the surface of the work. His gaze is direct, engaging the viewer with a sense of quiet observation.
Santa Maria's training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris provided him with a foundation in academic tradition, yet his later works, such as this portrait, show a clear departure toward more experimental methods. The application of paint is energetic, with visible strokes that define the contours of his face and the structure of his clothing. By eschewing smooth blending, the artist draws attention to the physical act of painting itself. This work offers a view into the personal style of an artist who bridged the gap between traditional portraiture and the modern movements emerging in Europe during his lifetime. The print preserves the texture of the original oil application, maintaining the balance between the subject and the atmospheric background.
