A serene triptych by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicting women enjoying a moonlit boat excursion during the autumn season.
This triptych by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicts a scene of leisure on the water during the autumn season. As a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, Kuniyoshi captures the atmosphere of a moonlit evening, where figures occupy wooden boats on a gently rippling river. The composition is divided across three panels, creating a wide perspective that allows the viewer to observe the interaction between the occupants of the vessels.
In the left panel, a woman sits alone in a small boat, gazing upward toward the moon. The central and right panels show a larger, covered boat where other figures point toward the sky, perhaps observing the moon or a flight of birds. The artist employs a balanced use of line and colour to define the wooden structures of the boats and the soft folds of the kimonos worn by the figures. The water is rendered with rhythmic, repetitive patterns that suggest movement, while the sky remains relatively clear, allowing the moon to serve as a quiet anchor for the scene.
Kuniyoshi was known for his technical skill and his ability to bring narrative depth to his prints. This work belongs to a series exploring the seasonal activities of women, a common theme in Edo-period art. The print demonstrates the artist's command of the woodblock medium, from the precise carving of the architectural elements to the subtle gradients in the water and sky. The figures are depicted with naturalistic poses, reflecting the relaxed nature of their outing. This print offers a glimpse into the social customs of the period, where such excursions provided a respite from daily life. The muted palette, dominated by blues, greys, and soft earth tones, reinforces the calm, nocturnal mood of the autumn setting.
