A woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro showing female abalone divers, one resting on the rocks and two others diving below.
Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) was a prominent Japanese artist best known for his ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings. He is considered one of the masters of the genre, particularly for his depictions of beautiful women (bijin-ga). Utamaro's work often captured the sensuality and grace of his subjects, and he was skilled at portraying the subtle nuances of emotion and expression. His prints were widely popular during his lifetime and continue to be celebrated for their artistic merit and cultural significance. 'Awabi Divers' depicts a scene of ama, or female divers, who traditionally harvested shellfish such as abalone. One woman sits on a rocky outcrop, drying off after diving. Below, two other divers are submerged in the water, presumably searching for their quarry. The composition is framed by a pine tree overhead, and the water is suggested by fine, horizontal lines. The print exemplifies Utamaro's skill in capturing the human form and his attention to detail in depicting everyday life.
