Description
Aysgarth in North Yorkshire brings the River Ure over broad limestone steps, where wooded banks and pale rock shelves give the falling water its distinctive, spreading shape.
Aysgarth lies in Wensleydale, within the Yorkshire Dales. Its three groups of waterfalls belong to the Ure, where hard limestone beds alternate with softer shale, creating a succession of ledges through the wooded river gorge.
White water fans across wide, shallow steps beneath a blue sky flecked with cream clouds. Pale slabs run almost horizontally through the scene, their edges separating blue pools from foaming drops. Thick green foliage frames the left bank and closes around the falls further back. The bright leaves and clear light suggest a summer day, with the water supplying the movement against the still rock.
