This etching by Giovanni Andrea Podestà depicts a scene of classical revelry, centred on the figure of Silenus. As a companion to Bacchus, Silenus is shown in a state of drunken repose, surrounded by a group of putti and satyrs. The composition is dense with activity, featuring a large decorative urn to the left and a heavy garland held aloft by figures on the right. Podestà, a Genoese artist who spent much of his career in Rome, was heavily influenced by the work of Nicolas Poussin and Titian. His printmaking style is characterised by a fluid, calligraphic line that captures the textures of skin, foliage, and stone with equal precision.

The scene draws upon the tradition of the Bacchanal, a subject popularised in the Renaissance and Baroque periods to explore themes of excess and nature.
