A detailed Mannerist engraving by Jan Harmensz. Muller illustrating the classical proverb that love requires the sustenance of food and wine.
This engraving by Jan Harmensz. Muller depicts the classical adage, Sine Cerere et Baccho friget Venus, which translates to 'without Ceres and Bacchus, Venus freezes.' The composition illustrates the necessity of food and wine for the sustenance of love. In the foreground, Bacchus, adorned with vine leaves and holding a cluster of grapes, walks alongside Ceres, who carries a sickle, representing the harvest. Their figures are rendered with the elongated proportions and muscular tension characteristic of the Northern Mannerist style.
In the background, Venus sits by a small fire with Cupid, shivering as she lacks the warmth provided by the other two deities. Muller employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the musculature of the figures and the textures of their drapery. The lighting is dramatic, creating a sense of volume that pushes the figures forward from the wooded setting. The print demonstrates the technical precision Muller achieved as a master engraver in Amsterdam, where he worked closely with the circle of Bartholomeus Spranger.
The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the print provides the moral context for the scene, a common practice in late sixteenth-century Dutch printmaking. The work functions as both a display of artistic virtuosity and a visual representation of a popular humanist proverb. The interplay between the foreground figures and the smaller, secondary scene in the distance creates a narrative depth that guides the viewer through the allegorical message. This print remains a fine example of the period's fascination with classical mythology and the technical capabilities of the burin.
