Félix Ziem maintained a lifelong fascination with Venice, returning to the city repeatedly throughout his career. This work captures the Bacino di San Marco, the expansive water basin facing the Doge's Palace and the Campanile. Ziem approaches the subject with a focus on atmospheric conditions, prioritising the interplay of light upon the water and the hazy horizon over precise architectural rendering.
