A dynamic marine scene by Maxime Maufra, depicting fishing boats navigating the turbulent waters near a lighthouse at Belle-Isle-en-Mer.
Maxime Maufra, a member of the Pont-Aven School, frequently turned his attention to the rugged coastlines of Brittany. This work captures the turbulent waters surrounding Belle-Isle-en-Mer, a location that drew many artists during the late nineteenth century. The composition focuses on the interaction between the man-made structure of the lighthouse and the raw power of the Atlantic Ocean.
The painting employs a palette dominated by deep sea-greens and greys, which contrast with the striking red sails of the fishing vessels. Maufra uses thick, visible brushwork to convey the movement of the waves and the spray crashing against the stone pier. The lighthouse stands as a steady vertical element, providing a sense of scale against the expansive, agitated sea. The sky is rendered with heavy, directional strokes, suggesting an overcast day with shifting light conditions.
Maufra was known for his direct observation of nature, often working outdoors to capture the immediate atmosphere of the coast. His approach to marine subjects reflects a transition from the lighter touch of Impressionism toward a more robust, textured application of paint. By focusing on the daily activities of local fishermen, he documents the maritime culture of the region. The work avoids sentimentality, opting instead for a direct representation of the challenging conditions faced by those navigating these waters. The interplay of the warm red sails against the cool, dark tones of the water creates a visual tension that draws the eye across the frame. This piece provides a clear example of Maufra's ability to balance descriptive detail with an expressive, painterly technique.
