A delicate 1936 watercolour by Nicolae Tonitza, capturing the sun-drenched architecture and coastal atmosphere of Balcic.
Nicolae Tonitza, a significant figure in early twentieth-century Romanian art, frequently visited the coastal town of Balcic during the interwar period. This work captures a quiet corner of the town, characterised by the distinctive architecture and Mediterranean light that drew many artists to the region. The composition focuses on the interplay between the white-walled structure, with its prominent balcony, and the surrounding foliage.
Tonitza employs a fluid, expressive technique in this watercolour. The brushwork is loose and immediate, allowing the paper to remain visible in areas, which contributes to the airy quality of the scene. The palette is dominated by warm, sun-drenched ochres and earthy tones, contrasted by the cool blue of the window frames and the distant sea. The central tree acts as a vertical anchor, dividing the architectural elements from the more open, atmospheric space beyond.
Unlike his more sombre social realist works, this piece reflects the lighter, more decorative side of Tonitza's practice. His time in Balcic allowed him to experiment with colour and form, moving away from rigid academic constraints. The work demonstrates his ability to translate the specific atmosphere of the Black Sea coast into a personal visual language. The signature and date, visible in the lower left, confirm its creation in 1936, a period when the artist was deeply engaged with the unique character of the Balcic environment. This print offers a clear view of his approach to light and shadow, capturing a fleeting moment of calm in a town that occupied a special place in the Romanian artistic imagination of the era.
