A delicate Southern Song dynasty fan painting featuring bamboo and insects, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This circular fan painting, attributed to the Southern Song dynasty artist Wu Bing, exemplifies the refined aesthetic of the imperial court. The composition focuses on a cluster of bamboo stalks, rendered with precise, controlled brushwork that captures the natural movement of the leaves. The artist employs a muted palette, allowing the subtle variations in green and brown to evoke a quiet, observational atmosphere.
Insects, including a dragonfly and a grasshopper, are positioned with careful attention to their anatomical features and their interaction with the bamboo. This focus on small-scale natural subjects is a hallmark of the bird-and-flower genre, which gained significant popularity during the Song period. The artist balances the density of the bamboo foliage against the open, negative space of the silk background, creating a sense of depth despite the two-dimensional medium.
The circular format, known as a fan painting, was a common medium for court artists to display their skill in miniature. The work demonstrates the technical mastery required to paint on silk, where every stroke is permanent and requires absolute confidence. The inclusion of the artist's seal in the lower corner provides a clear attribution to Wu Bing, who served as a painter-in-attendance at the imperial academy. This piece reflects the period's interest in the observation of the natural world, presented with a restrained and elegant hand. The work remains a fine example of the meticulous attention to detail that defined the artistic output of the Southern Song court, where the study of flora and fauna was elevated to a high art form.
