A refined ink wash painting of bamboo and garden rocks by the Yuan Dynasty master Li Kan, showcasing precise brushwork and balanced composition.
Li Kan was a scholar-official during the Yuan Dynasty, recognised primarily for his mastery of ink bamboo painting. This work, executed in ink on silk, demonstrates the technical precision and calligraphic control that defined his practice. The composition features tall, slender bamboo stalks rising behind weathered garden rocks, a subject that carried significant symbolic weight in Chinese literati culture.
In this piece, the artist employs varying ink tones to create a sense of depth and volume. The bamboo leaves are rendered with sharp, decisive strokes, while the stalks show subtle gradations of ink to suggest cylindrical form. The rocks are depicted with softer, more textured brushwork, providing a stable visual counterpoint to the verticality of the bamboo. The negative space is managed with care, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the organic growth of the plants and the solid, immovable nature of the stone.
Li Kan authored the 'Zhu pu xiang lu' (Detailed Record of Bamboo), a treatise that codified the methods for painting bamboo. His approach prioritised the observation of nature, combined with the rigorous discipline of brushwork. The work reflects the aesthetic values of the Yuan period, where artists sought to express personal character and moral integrity through the depiction of resilient plants. The muted, earthy tones of the aged silk provide a neutral backdrop, ensuring that the focus remains on the ink application and the structural balance of the composition. This print captures the subtle tonal shifts of the original ink, offering a clear view of the artist's brush technique and the balanced arrangement of the subject matter.
