Description
Banavie near Fort William, Highland, pairs a red hulled boat with blue canal water, its pale cottages and dark lock gates standing below a snow streaked mountain backdrop.
At the western end of the Caledonian Canal, the settlement is known for Neptune's Staircase. This flight of eight connected locks raises vessels through the changing levels near Fort William, bringing substantial engineering into the landscape north of Loch Linnhe.
A red and white boat lies against the stone quay at Banavie, reflected in still blue water. Closed lock gates stand ahead beneath white railings, with grassy banks and pale houses on either side. A broad mountain rises beyond, its upper cliffs carrying patches of snow. Full green trees and bright clouds suggest late spring, when the lower canal feels sunny beneath the colder heights.
