A fine Renaissance engraving by Girolamo Mocetto, depicting the Baptism of Christ with precise line work and traditional religious iconography.
This engraving by Girolamo Mocetto depicts the Baptism of Christ, a subject frequently explored by Venetian and North Italian artists of the period. Mocetto, active in Venice and Verona, was a painter and engraver whose work often reflects the influence of Giovanni Bellini and the broader Venetian school. The composition follows traditional iconographic conventions, placing Christ at the centre, standing in the water, while John the Baptist performs the rite. Above, the figure of God the Father appears within a cloud formation, overseeing the event. To the right, three figures stand on the riverbank, their presence adding a sense of narrative depth to the scene.
The technical execution demonstrates the characteristics of early Italian engraving. The lines are precise and descriptive, used to define the musculature of the figures and the folds of their garments. The background features a fortified town and a distant bridge, elements that provide a sense of place while maintaining the symbolic nature of the biblical narrative. Mocetto employs a clear, linear approach to shading, which creates a sense of volume without relying on the atmospheric effects found in contemporary painting. The work provides insight into the dissemination of religious imagery through printmaking during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. By translating painterly compositions into the medium of engraving, artists like Mocetto made these narratives accessible to a wider audience, contributing to the visual culture of the Italian Renaissance. The print remains a clear example of the stylistic synthesis between the Venetian interest in form and the graphic traditions of the era.
