A hand-coloured etching by Anna Beeck depicting the ruins of the Basilica of Maxentius in Rome, based on the work of Israel Silvestre.
This hand-coloured etching depicts the ruins of the Basilica of Maxentius, situated in the Roman Forum. The work is attributed to the Dutch engraver Anna Beeck, who produced a series of topographical views based on the earlier plates of the French artist Israel Silvestre. The original inscription, 'Silvestre fecit', remains visible at the base, acknowledging the source material while Beeck provides her own interpretation through the application of colour.
The composition focuses on the massive brick arches of the basilica, which dominate the frame. The artist captures the structure in a state of decay, with vegetation sprouting from the upper masonry, a common motif in seventeenth-century depictions of Roman ruins. The foreground is populated by small figures, providing a sense of scale against the immense proportions of the ancient architecture. The palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones for the brickwork and soft washes for the sky, which creates a clear distinction between the solid ruins and the open atmosphere.
Beeck was active in The Hague and is known for her contributions to cartography and topographical illustration. Her work reflects the period interest in the 'Grand Tour' and the documentation of classical sites. The print is presented within a decorative border, typical of the period's presentation style for collected topographical views. This piece offers a glimpse into how European artists of the late seventeenth century engaged with the physical remains of antiquity, blending technical precision with the aesthetic sensibilities of the Baroque era. It remains a document of both the architectural state of the site at the time and the printmaking practices of the Dutch Republic.
