A moody, atmospheric depiction of a quiet New Orleans street at night, painted by Remo Farruggio in 1938.
Basin Street, painted by Remo Farruggio in 1938, captures a nocturnal view of the New Orleans district. The composition employs a stark, theatrical use of light and shadow, characteristic of the American Scene Painting movement during the interwar period. The architecture, featuring the iconic wrought-iron balconies and tall, narrow windows of the French Quarter, frames a solitary figure walking down the centre of the road.
Farruggio utilises a monochromatic palette to heighten the sense of isolation and quietude. The street lamps cast long, dramatic shadows across the pavement, creating a sense of depth that draws the viewer into the scene. The buildings on either side are rendered with geometric precision, contrasting with the fluid, almost spectral appearance of the figure. A sign on the right-hand building contains handwritten text, a detail that adds a layer of narrative specificity to the work.
Born in Sicily and later moving to the United States, Farruggio was active in the New York art scene and participated in the Federal Art Project. This work reflects the broader interest among artists of the 1930s in documenting the unique character of American urban environments. The painting avoids sentimentality, opting instead for a moody, atmospheric depiction of a specific place at a specific time. The absence of other people and the stillness of the air suggest a moment of introspection. The work remains a compelling example of how artists of the era interpreted the social and physical geography of the United States through a lens of personal observation and stylistic restraint.
