A classic Italian Baroque still life by Bartolomeo Cavarozzi, featuring a basket of fruit rendered with dramatic light and shadow.
Bartolomeo Cavarozzi, a follower of Caravaggio, produced this still life during the early seventeenth century. The composition centres on a woven basket overflowing with seasonal produce, including grapes, pomegranates, and figs. The artist employs a dark, neutral background to isolate the objects, a technique that draws the eye to the textures of the fruit and the woven reeds of the basket.
The lighting is directional, creating sharp contrasts between the illuminated surfaces of the fruit and the deep shadows cast within the basket. This approach reflects the influence of the Caravaggesque style, which prioritised dramatic light to define form and volume. The artist captures the physical state of the fruit with precision, noting the split skin of the pomegranate and the translucent quality of the white grapes. The large, dark green fig leaves provide a structural frame for the arrangement, adding a sense of weight to the upper portion of the composition.
Cavarozzi was active in Rome and later in Spain, where he introduced these stylistic methods to a wider audience. His work in this genre demonstrates a focus on natural observation, where the arrangement appears both deliberate and spontaneous. The muted palette relies on earthy tones, punctuated by the deep red of the pomegranate seeds and the dark purple of the grapes. This print captures the atmospheric quality of the original oil painting, preserving the tonal shifts and the tactile rendering of the subject matter. It is a representative example of the Italian Baroque interest in the quiet observation of domestic objects, elevated through technical skill and a disciplined approach to light and shadow.
