A whimsical woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada depicting mythical creatures and animals rendered as intricate woven basketry.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada, a prominent figure of the Utagawa school, depicts a whimsical collection of figures and animals rendered in the form of woven basketry. The composition features a peacock, a mythical oni, and shishi (guardian lions), all constructed from wickerwork patterns. The artist employs a light, warm-toned background that allows the varied textures of the woven forms to emerge clearly.
Kunisada, also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III, was prolific in his output of actor prints and genre scenes. This particular work demonstrates his ability to blend traditional Japanese motifs with imaginative, playful subject matter. The inclusion of the craftsman Ichida Shōshichirō in the title suggests a celebration of artisan skill, framing the basketry as a form of artistic performance or technical marvel. The print utilises a balanced palette of soft greens, muted reds, and earthy ochres, typical of the mid-nineteenth-century Edo period aesthetic.
The visual arrangement is ornamental, prioritising the decorative quality of the woven surfaces over strict spatial depth. Each figure is clearly delineated, with the artist using fine lines to suggest the weave of the bamboo or rattan. The presence of the peony at the bottom left provides a naturalistic contrast to the artificial, constructed nature of the other subjects. This print offers a glimpse into the creative curiosity of the period, where everyday objects and traditional folklore were reimagined through the lens of craft and design.
