A detailed mezzotint print of Basel by Charles Turner, originally part of J.M.W. Turner's Liber Studiorum collection.
This print, titled Basle, is a plate from the Liber Studiorum, a collection of landscape compositions conceived by J.M.W. Turner. Charles Turner, a skilled engraver, executed the mezzotint work based on the original drawings by J.M.W. Turner. The print depicts the Swiss city of Basel, focusing on the Rhine river and the bridge connecting the urban architecture to the surrounding environment. The spires of the Basel Minster rise in the distance, providing a vertical anchor to the horizontal expanse of the river and the bridge.
The technique employed here is a combination of etched lines for the structural details and mezzotint for the atmospheric effects. The light source, positioned behind the clouds, creates a soft glow that illuminates the water and the facades of the buildings along the riverbank. This method allows for a range of tonal values, from the deep shadows under the bridge to the bright highlights on the water surface. The inclusion of small figures in boats adds a sense of scale and daily activity to the scene.
As part of the Liber Studiorum, this work was intended to demonstrate the variety of landscape subjects, including architectural, historical, and mountainous themes. The collaboration between the two Turners resulted in a refined interpretation of European topography. The print captures the specific character of the city while maintaining the atmospheric qualities associated with the Romantic period. The composition balances the solid forms of the buildings with the fluid nature of the river, creating a sense of calm observation. This museum-grade print preserves the tonal nuances of the original copper plate, offering a clear view of the engraver's precision and the artist's original vision.
