Description
A moody, atmospheric monotype by Maurice Prendergast capturing the festive illumination of Bastille Day in Paris, 1892.
Maurice Prendergast created this monotype during his formative years in Paris, where he studied at the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi. The work captures the festive atmosphere of the French national holiday, Bastille Day, in 1892. Prendergast employs a distinct visual language, favouring flattened forms and decorative patterns over traditional perspective. The scene is dominated by dark, moody tones that suggest the evening setting, punctuated by the soft, glowing orbs of paper lanterns suspended in the trees. The figures are rendered with loose, gestural strokes, creating a sense of movement and collective celebration. Prendergast was deeply influenced by the aesthetic qualities of Japanese woodblock prints, which is evident in the deliberate arrangement of the composition and the emphasis on surface design. The text at the bottom, 'Le Quatorze Juillet 1892', is integrated into the design, functioning as both a title and a decorative element. This work demonstrates the artist's early experimentation with the monotype medium, a process that allowed him to achieve unique textures and atmospheric effects through the manipulation of ink on a plate. Unlike his later, more colourful watercolours, this piece relies on a restricted palette to convey the nocturnal mood. The interplay between the dark silhouettes of the crowd and the luminous lanterns creates a rhythmic quality across the surface. Prendergast's ability to capture the essence of public life in Paris remains a defining characteristic of his early output. This print offers a glimpse into the artist's transition from his background in commercial sign painting to the more expressive, painterly style that would define his career. It remains a representative example of his fascination with urban leisure and the visual spectacle of city life at the end of the nineteenth century.
