Maurice Prendergast
A study of seaside leisure in Brittany, featuring the rhythmic brushwork and decorative colour application characteristic of Maurice Prendergast.
Maurice Prendergast visited the coastal town of Saint-Malo in Brittany during his travels in Europe. This work captures the leisure activities of the period, focusing on the beach scene with its characteristic bathing tents and figures in period dress. Prendergast employs a distinct technique, applying paint in short, mosaic-like strokes that create a sense of movement across the surface of the canvas. The composition is flattened, prioritising the decorative arrangement of colour patches over traditional perspective. The sky is rendered in horizontal bands of blue and yellow, while the figures in the foreground are simplified into blocky, rhythmic shapes. The palette is bright, utilising primary colours to define the tents and the clothing of the beachgoers against the sandy tones of the shore. Prendergast was influenced by the work of the Nabis and the broader Post-Impressionist movement, particularly the experiments with colour and form seen in the works of Paul Cézanne and Georges Seurat. Rather than attempting to replicate the visual reality of the scene, he constructs a personal interpretation of the atmosphere. The paint application is thick, giving the surface a tactile quality that aligns with his background in monotype printing. This approach allows the viewer to observe the construction of the image through individual marks, rather than a blended, smooth finish. The scene remains a record of early twentieth-century seaside life, filtered through the lens of a modernist sensibility that favoured pattern and rhythm.
