This oil on canvas painting by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner depicts two women and two children in a stylised outdoor setting, rendered with angular lines and bold colours typical of Expressionist art.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a German Expressionist painter and printmaker, was a founder of the artists group Die Brücke (The Bridge), a key group leading to the foundation of Expressionism in 20th-century art. He volunteered for military service in the First World War, but suffered a breakdown and was eventually discharged. In 1937, his work was declared "degenerate" by the Nazis, and over 600 of his works were removed from German museums. He committed suicide in 1938. 'Bathing Women and Children' exemplifies Kirchner's distinctive style, characterised by bold colours and simplified forms. The composition features a group of figures, two women and two children, set within a stylised outdoor setting. The figures are rendered with angular lines and flattened planes, typical of Expressionist art. The colour palette is striking, with the figures depicted in shades of pink and yellow, contrasted against the red and blue of the background. The scene conveys a sense of spontaneity and energy, capturing a fleeting moment of leisure and interaction.
