Francisco de Zurbarán painted this work for the Charterhouse of Jerez de la Frontera. It depicts a legendary military encounter where the Virgin Mary appeared to assist Christian forces. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the terrestrial battlefield and the celestial vision above.

In the foreground, a soldier in contemporary seventeenth-century attire gestures toward the conflict, acting as a bridge between the viewer and the narrative. The middle ground contains the skirmish itself, rendered with a focus on the movement of horses and the clash of arms. Zurbarán employs a tenebrist approach, where light sources are carefully managed to define the forms of the soldiers and the surrounding terrain. The palette remains grounded in earth tones, which contrasts with the luminous, golden atmosphere surrounding the Virgin and Child.
