Henri-Edmond Cross's 'Beach at Cabasson' captures a serene coastal scene with children at play, rendered in the Pointillist style. The artwork uses small dots of colour to create a shimmering effect of light and movement.
Henri-Edmond Cross, a French painter born in Douai, was a major figure in the Neo-Impressionist movement. He initially worked in a more realist style, but after encountering the work of Georges Seurat, he adopted the Pointillist technique. This involved applying small, distinct dots of colour to the canvas, which would then blend in the viewer's eye to create a unified image. Cross's later work moved away from strict Pointillism, using broader brushstrokes and more intense colours. He found inspiration in the landscapes of southern France, where he spent much of his life. 'Beach at Cabasson' exemplifies Cross's mature style. The painting depicts a coastal scene with children playing on the beach. The composition is divided into horizontal bands of sky, sea, and sand, each rendered with careful attention to light and colour. The Pointillist technique is evident in the small, individual dots of paint that make up the image. These dots create a shimmering effect, capturing the bright sunlight and the movement of the water. The figures are loosely defined, contributing to the overall sense of tranquility and leisure.
