A sun-drenched coastal scene by Joaquín Sorolla, capturing the movement of the surf and the golden sands of Biarritz with fluid, expressive brushwork.
Joaquín Sorolla visited the French coastal town of Biarritz in 1906, producing a series of works that capture the specific light and atmosphere of the Atlantic coast. This painting demonstrates his characteristic approach to plein air observation, where the focus remains on the immediate sensory experience of the seaside environment. The composition is divided into horizontal bands, separating the expansive, sun-drenched sand from the turbulent, deep-toned waters of the Bay of Biscay.
Sorolla employs a rapid, gestural brushwork that conveys the movement of the surf and the shifting quality of the light. The foreground is dominated by broad, diagonal strokes of ochre and violet, which suggest the texture of the sand and the long shadows cast by the late afternoon sun. These colours are applied with a confidence that prioritises the overall effect of light over minute detail. The sea itself is rendered in darker, cooler tones, providing a visual counterpoint to the warmth of the beach. Small, indistinct figures are placed within the scene, providing a sense of scale and human presence without distracting from the natural elements.
Unlike his later, more controlled compositions, this work retains a sense of immediacy. It reflects the artist's ability to translate the transient effects of nature onto canvas with economy and precision. The palette is balanced, utilising the contrast between the warm, golden tones of the shore and the deep, oceanic blues and greens. This piece offers a clear view into Sorolla's working method, showing how he utilised colour to define form and space. It remains a representative example of his ability to capture the specific character of a location through direct observation and a fluid, expressive application of paint.
