William James Glackens (1870-1938) was an American realist and Impressionist painter. He is best known as a member of the Ashcan School, a group of artists who focused on depicting scenes of everyday life in New York City. However, Glackens also painted a number of landscapes and seascapes, often in a lighter, more Impressionistic style. 'Beach Side' exemplifies this approach. The painting depicts a sunny day at the beach, with figures scattered along the shore and sailboats on the horizon.
