This stereoscopic photograph captures a stark, winter scene in Echo Canyon, Utah. Eadweard Muybridge, working under the commission of the Union Pacific Railroad, documented the rugged terrain of the American West during the late 1860s. The image features a prominent rock formation, known as Beacon Rock, set against a snow-covered slope. A lone figure stands near the base of the formation, providing a sense of scale to the geological structure. Muybridge utilised the stereoscopic format, which was popular for viewing in home parlours during the Victorian era. By placing two nearly identical images side by side, the viewer could experience a three-dimensional effect when using a stereoscope. The composition relies on the contrast between the dark, weathered stone and the bright, reflective snow. The technical precision required to capture such detail in the harsh conditions of the Utah territory demonstrates the photographer's skill with the wet-collodion process. This work belongs to a series documenting the expansion of the transcontinental railway.
