Dante Gabriel Rossetti's *Beata Beatrix* portrays Elizabeth Siddal as Dante's Beatrice at the moment of death, rendered with symbolic elements and a dreamlike atmosphere characteristic of the Pre-Raphaelite movement.
Dante Gabriel Rossetti's *Beata Beatrix* is a symbolic portrait of Elizabeth Siddal, Rossetti's wife, painted several years after her death in 1862. The painting depicts Siddal as Beatrice from Dante Alighieri's *La Vita Nuova*, at the moment of her death. Rossetti used Jane Morris as a model for the face, striving to capture Siddal's likeness from memory and earlier sketches. Beatrice is shown in a state of spiritual ecstasy, her eyes closed and lips parted, as if in a trance. A halo-like light surrounds her head. Her clasped hands hold a sundial, symbolising the passage of time, while a red dove, representing the Holy Spirit, delivers a white poppy, a symbol of opium and death. In the background, figures representing Dante and Love stand watch. The hazy, dreamlike atmosphere and the symbolic elements contribute to the painting's overall sense of melancholy and spiritual yearning. Rossetti worked on the painting from around 1864 to 1870, creating a work that is both a personal tribute and a meditation on love, loss, and the afterlife.
