A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenobu, depicting a woman in a patterned kimono carrying a ceremonial wedding box.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenobu depicts a woman in traditional attire, carrying a ceremonial wedding box. Shigenobu, who was also known as Ishikawa Toyonobu, produced this work during the mid-eighteenth century. The composition follows the conventions of the Ukiyo-e school, focusing on the grace of the figure and the decorative quality of her kimono.
The artist employs a clear, linear style typical of the period. The woman is shown in profile, her posture suggesting a slow, deliberate movement. Her kimono features a variety of patterns, including geometric shapes and floral motifs, which demonstrate the technical skill involved in carving the woodblocks for such prints. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones of yellow, pink, and black ink to define the forms. Above the figure, a branch with blossoms provides a seasonal context, often used in Japanese prints to suggest the timing of the event or the mood of the subject.
Shigenobu was a student of Nishimura Shigenaga and became a significant figure in the development of the benizuri-e, or crimson-printed, style. This technique allowed for the addition of colour beyond the initial black ink outlines. The print captures the aesthetic preferences of the Edo period, where the depiction of beauties, or bijin-ga, was a primary subject for artists. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper right corner serves to identify the subject or provide a poetic accompaniment to the visual scene. The work remains a clear example of the graphic clarity and stylistic balance achieved by artists working within the print houses of Edo.
