A detailed pen and ink drawing by Johann Conrad Steiner depicting the scenic waterfalls and classical architecture of Tivoli.
This work by the Swiss artist Johann Conrad Steiner captures the picturesque scenery of Tivoli, a location frequently visited by European artists during the eighteenth century. The composition centres on a large, gnarled tree that frames the view, directing the eye toward a cascading waterfall in the middle distance. To the right, the architectural silhouette of a classical temple sits atop the rocky cliffs, a common motif in the art of the period that evokes the classical heritage of the Italian countryside.
Steiner employs a delicate pen and ink technique, supplemented by monochromatic wash to define form and shadow. The application of wash creates a sense of depth, separating the foreground figures from the receding hills. Two figures rest beneath the canopy of the primary tree, while a third individual stands near the water, holding a fishing rod. These small, staffage figures provide a sense of scale to the natural environment, a technique often used to humanise grand topographical views.
The drawing reflects the interest in the Italian Grand Tour, where artists documented the terrain and ruins of the region. Steiner demonstrates a precise hand in his rendering of foliage and rock textures, balancing the wildness of the waterfall with the structured elements of the classical architecture. The muted palette, achieved through the use of sepia or bistre washes, maintains a focus on the structural composition and the interplay of light across the scene. This piece offers a glimpse into the observational practices of artists working in the late eighteenth century, who sought to capture the harmony between human activity and the natural world.
