An authentic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu, capturing an intimate domestic scene with traditional calligraphic line work.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu belongs to the genre of shunga, or erotic art, which flourished during the Edo period in Japan. Masanobu was a significant figure in the development of ukiyo-e, known for his technical innovations in printmaking and his contributions to the aesthetic standards of the time. The composition displays the characteristic flat perspective and clean, calligraphic line work associated with early eighteenth-century Japanese prints.
The scene depicts a couple in an intimate setting, rendered with the stylistic conventions of the era. The figures are positioned within a domestic interior, defined by architectural elements such as the sliding screen and the minimalist floor arrangement. The artist employs a limited colour palette, focusing on muted tones that allow the focus to remain on the fluid outlines of the figures and the patterns of their garments. The inclusion of calligraphic text within the image space is a common feature of this period, integrating the narrative with the visual elements.
As a practitioner of the ukiyo-e school, Masanobu helped define the visual language of the floating world. His work often explored the daily lives and private moments of urban residents in Edo. This print provides a clear example of the technical precision required for early woodblock production, where each line and colour block was carved by hand. The work remains a representative example of the artistic output of the period, reflecting the social and cultural interests of the merchant class who were the primary consumers of these prints. The composition balances the physical forms of the subjects with the surrounding interior, maintaining a sense of order despite the private nature of the subject matter.
