A 1993 lithograph by Helen Frankenthaler, featuring atmospheric colour washes and gestural marks that explore the fluidity of abstract form.
Beginnings, a lithograph produced by Helen Frankenthaler in 1993, demonstrates the artist's mastery of the soak-stain technique translated into printmaking. Frankenthaler, a central figure in the development of American abstraction, often applied thinned paint directly onto unprimed canvas, allowing the pigment to bleed into the fibres. In this work, she achieves a similar effect through the layering of translucent colour fields and gestural marks.
The composition is defined by an interplay between expansive, atmospheric washes of red, orange, and violet, and precise, calligraphic lines. A bright yellow orb sits within a warm, diffused cloud of red, while a vertical band of deep green anchors the right side of the frame. These soft, organic shapes contrast with the darker, more concentrated forms that appear to float across the white ground. Frankenthaler balances the spontaneity of her marks with a deliberate spatial arrangement, creating a sense of depth that remains tethered to the two-dimensional surface of the paper.
Her approach to printmaking was collaborative, often working closely with master printers to replicate the fluidity of her painting process. In Beginnings, the texture of the paper remains visible, allowing the ink to settle in a way that mimics the absorption of watercolour. The work avoids rigid structure, favouring instead a rhythmic distribution of colour and form. It captures a moment of visual equilibrium, where the tension between the saturated edges and the open, negative space creates a sense of movement. This print reflects the later period of her career, during which she continued to explore the expressive potential of colour and the physical properties of her materials, maintaining a focus on the relationship between light, space, and the act of mark-making.
