A detailed 1551 engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert depicting a moralising scene of a wealthy man's burial, rendered with Northern Renaissance precision.
This engraving, executed by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert after a design by Maarten van Heemskerck, depicts the moralising theme of the burial of a wealthy man. The composition is divided into distinct zones of action. In the foreground, a gravedigger works with a spade, while the deceased figure lies in a cavernous, monstrous opening that suggests the jaws of hell. This imagery serves as a direct commentary on the vanity of material wealth and the inevitability of judgement.
Behind the primary action, a procession of hooded figures stands in solemn formation. A central cleric figure, holding a candle and a book, presides over the scene. The figures are rendered with the muscularity and anatomical precision characteristic of the period, reflecting the influence of Italian Mannerism on Northern European printmakers. The hatching techniques used throughout the work create a sense of volume and texture, particularly in the heavy folds of the clerical robes and the rugged terrain of the burial site.
Coornhert was a significant figure in the Dutch intellectual and artistic sphere, known for his work as an engraver, writer, and philosopher. His collaboration with Van Heemskerck produced a series of prints that explored biblical narratives and moral lessons. This specific work demonstrates the technical skill required for mid-sixteenth-century copperplate engraving, where every line contributes to the overall narrative weight. The print is a clear example of the didactic nature of Northern Renaissance art, where visual storytelling was employed to communicate theological concepts to a broad audience. The stark contrast between the physical labour of the gravedigger and the ritualistic presence of the clergy creates a tension that defines the composition.
