A delicate woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai featuring bell-flowers and a dragonfly, executed in the traditional kacho-ga style.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai belongs to a series of large-format flower studies, often referred to as the 'Large Flower' series. Produced during the 1830s, these works demonstrate the artist's mastery of the kacho-ga genre, which focuses on birds and flowers. The composition features a cluster of bell-flowers, rendered with soft, graduated colour tones that suggest the delicate texture of the petals. A single dragonfly hovers in the upper left quadrant, providing a sense of movement against the static floral arrangement.
Hokusai employs a refined colour palette, utilising muted pinks, deep greens, and subtle blues. The background remains largely unadorned, allowing the viewer to focus on the botanical accuracy and the calligraphic quality of the line work. The artist's signature and seal are positioned on the left, consistent with the conventions of the period. This print reflects the technical precision of the Edo-period woodblock printing process, where multiple blocks were carved to achieve the specific colour layering seen here.
Unlike his more famous landscape series, these botanical studies reveal a quieter, more observational approach to nature. The arrangement of the flowers is balanced, yet it avoids rigid symmetry. The dragonfly acts as a point of interest, drawing the eye across the negative space of the paper. This work is a representative example of Hokusai's later career, where he moved away from the busy urban scenes of his earlier prints to explore the natural world with greater focus and technical control. The print is a fine example of the aesthetic values prevalent in nineteenth-century Japanese art, prioritising clarity, observation, and the harmonious integration of subject matter.
