Belper makes its industrial past warmly approachable beside the Derwent, an engaging Derbyshire choice for anyone who enjoys discovering a town through the river routes that helped shape it.
Three broad masonry arches cross dark blue water beneath fine grey railings. Tall red brick ranges rise behind them, their many pale windows repeating in neat tiers. A diagonal white cascade cuts across the foreground beside pink flower clusters and overhanging green leaves.
Bridge, mill and weir give Belper a strong relationship between useful structures and the current below. The riverbank keeps the larger facades at a comfortable distance, allowing their scale to register without losing the close movement of falling water.
