A dramatic depiction of the biblical narrative, featuring vast architecture and supernatural light, painted by the British Romantic artist John Martin.
John Martin, a painter known for his dramatic and large-scale compositions, completed this work in 1820. It depicts the biblical narrative from the Book of Daniel, where King Belshazzar witnesses a miraculous inscription appearing on the wall during a banquet. The scene is defined by its immense architectural scale, featuring vast, colonnaded halls that recede into the distance, dwarfing the human figures below.
Martin employs a theatrical use of light to direct the viewer's attention. The glowing, supernatural writing on the wall serves as the primary light source, casting long shadows and illuminating the terrified guests. Above the palace, a stormy sky filled with lightning adds to the sense of impending doom. The composition is structured to emphasise the sheer size of the Babylonian setting, with the figures arranged in small, frantic groups that contrast with the rigid, repetitive geometry of the architecture.
This painting was a sensation upon its initial exhibition at the British Institution. It reflects the nineteenth-century fascination with the sublime, where nature and divine intervention are presented as overwhelming forces. Martin's ability to combine precise architectural detail with atmospheric, painterly effects allowed him to create a sense of awe. The work remains a primary example of his interest in apocalyptic themes and his mastery of perspective to convey narrative tension. By focusing on the reaction of the crowd and the king, Martin captures a moment of transition between luxury and destruction. The print captures the depth of the original oil painting, preserving the contrast between the dark, brooding sky and the illuminated interior of the palace.
