Painted in 1895, 'Berlin Model' by Edvard Munch is a portrait characterised by loose brushstrokes and a restrained palette. The work captures the sitter's introspective gaze, conveying a sense of melancholy and emotional depth.
Edvard Munch, a Norwegian painter (1863-1944), is best known for his emotionally charged and psychologically penetrating works. A forerunner of Expressionism, Munch aimed to depict inner emotional states through his art, often exploring themes of anxiety, love, and death. His distinctive style features bold colours, distorted forms, and a raw, almost unfinished quality. 'Berlin Model', painted in 1895, exemplifies Munch's approach to portraiture. The subject, a young woman, is rendered with loose, gestural brushstrokes. The palette is restrained, dominated by a warm, creamy background against which the model's features are sketched in red, black, and blue. The model's gaze is direct, yet there is a sense of melancholy or introspection in her expression. The composition is simple, focusing attention on the sitter's face and upper body. The visible brushwork and unfinished quality contribute to the painting's sense of immediacy and emotional intensity. Munch's signature is visible in the lower right corner.
