Description
A striking example of Color Field painting, Morris Louis's 'Beth Zayin' features cascading rivulets of colour on canvas, creating a luminous and dynamic abstract composition.
Morris Louis (1912-1962) was an American painter and a major figure in the Color Field movement, a style related to Abstract Expressionism. He is best known for his series of "Veils", "Florals", "Unfurleds", and "Stripes". These works are characterised by the staining of thin layers of acrylic paint onto unsized and unprimed canvas, creating luminous colour effects. Louis's technique involved pouring diluted paint onto the canvas, allowing it to soak into the fabric and create flowing, translucent forms. This process eliminated brushstrokes and emphasised the flatness of the picture plane. 'Beth Zayin' exemplifies Louis's signature style. Vertical rivulets of colour cascade down the canvas, merging and overlapping to create a sense of depth and movement. The colours, ranging from dark browns and blacks to blues, greens, and reds, are applied in thin washes, allowing the canvas to show through and creating a luminous effect. The overall composition is abstract, with no discernible subject matter beyond the interplay of colour and form. This work invites viewers to contemplate the pure visual experience of colour and light.
