Description
Bexhill-on-Sea in East Sussex gives modern architecture a seafront setting, where its celebrated pavilion brings white walls and curved glass into close conversation with the Channel.
On the East Sussex seafront at Bexhill-on-Sea, the De La Warr Pavilion was designed by Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff in 1935. Its Grade I listing recognises a public building that brought the modern movement to an English seaside town.
White rectangular walls rise above trimmed hedges and green lawns, interrupted by tall dark windows. At the right, a curved glazed stair tower faces a narrow strip of blue sea. Pale paths divide the foreground grass, while ornamental planting softens the low boundary walls. Strong sunshine and a sky filled with white clouds give the clean architectural lines a bright summer clarity.
